Kent Online | Army joins Bobbies to Patrol Maidstone town centre

Quote:Soldiers are to join police in patrolling Kent's streets.

Police are to join officers from 36 Engineer Regiment, based in Maidstone, in a bid to tackle public disorder.

The Army's Provost staff - responsible for discipline in the regiment - have been invited to join police beat patrols,  to share best practice and information.

Chief Insp Robbie Graham said: "We are delighted to welcome the police officers from 36 Engineer Regiment, who will be joining our town centre beat patrols in the coming months.

"Not only is this an important learning tool for us, as a useful way to exchange ideas on policing, but it also helps cement our partnership links."

He said recent changes in policing the town centre had included the appointment of a new inspector and more resources.

Regimental Adjutant of 36 Engineer Regiment Capt Jamie Walker said: "36 Engineer Regiment enjoys a close relationship with the local community in Maidstone, and we want to ensure that all reasonable measures are taken to preserve that relationship.

"We approached the police with the initiative following a number of our soldiers returning from operations and going into town to celebrate coming home safely."

They would be on patrol to deal quickly with revellers who misbehave.
