FACT CHECK: Pope Leo XIV Did NOT Declare All Religions Equal — Christians Must Stop Spreading Misleading Claims
Christian unity must rest upon truth, not rumor. A viral meme targeting Pope Leo XIV illustrates why Christians have a duty to verify accusations before sharing them.
Watchman News | November 6, 2026
A misleading social-media meme has been circulating with the accusation:
“Pope Leo suggests all religions are equal, does not mention Christ.”
Some Christians have repeated the claim, while others have gone further, sarcastically asking whether the Pope is even Catholic.
But is the accusation supported by what Pope Leo XIV actually said?
The answer is no. The available statements do not support the allegation that Pope Leo declared all religions equal or abandoned the unique saving role of Jesus Christ.
Pope Leo explicitly declared that Jesus Christ alone saves
On August 25, 2025, while addressing French altar servers, Pope Leo XIV stated:
“Only Jesus comes to save us, no-one else.”
He specifically referenced Acts 4:12, affirming that salvation is found in no other name.
This is a clear affirmation of the Christian doctrine that Jesus Christ is the unique Savior of humanity.

The context: Christian unity and interreligious cooperation
Pope Leo XIV has repeatedly encouraged dialogue among Christian churches, including the historic Eastern and Oriental Orthodox traditions.
On September 16, 2025, he welcomed Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, for discussions involving relations between their churches, Christian cooperation, and peace.
On November 30, 2025, he visited the Armenian Apostolic Cathedral in Istanbul, where he commended the Armenian Church’s Christian witness and expressed gratitude for the bonds between the two churches.
These encounters concerned Christian ecumenism—the pursuit of understanding and unity among those who confess Jesus Christ.
Leo has also addressed wider interreligious cooperation involving non-Christian communities, particularly concerning peace, justice, and opposition to religiously justified violence.
In his October 2025 prayer intention, concerning collaboration among different religious traditions, he explicitly addressed his prayer to “Lord Jesus.”
Therefore, the blanket claim that he does not mention Christ is contradicted by the documented record.
Cooperation does not mean doctrinal equality
In his October 28, 2025, address commemorating Nostra Aetate, Pope Leo XIV discussed elements of truth and holiness found in other religions.
That particular address did not explicitly name Jesus Christ. However, it also did not declare that all religions were doctrinally equal or equally capable of salvation.
Indeed, in his October 29 general audience on interreligious dialogue, Leo began with the words of Jesus to the Samaritan woman, citing John 4:24.
Dialogue is not necessarily doctrinal agreement. Cooperation for peace is not a declaration that every religious belief is equally true.
Christians may reasonably debate the theological boundaries of interreligious cooperation. But those debates must rest on what was actually said, rather than conclusions imposed by misleading memes.
We are Celtic and Western Orthodox — and we defend the truth
At Watchman News and St. Andrew’s Orthodox Church of the Culdees, we uphold our Celtic and Western Orthodox Christian heritage.
Our doctrinal differences with Roman Catholicism do not give us permission to misrepresent its leaders.
We should be among the first to defend the truth, even when the person being falsely accused belongs to a different Christian jurisdiction.
The Ninth Commandment forbids bearing false witness (Exodus 20:16).
And Scripture gives a particularly sober warning to those who teach:
“My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.” — James 3:1 (KJV)
Those who publicly teach, accuse, or circulate religious claims assume a serious responsibility.
When Christians discover that a widely shared accusation is misleading, correcting that misinformation is part of their duty to the truth. Persistently circulating an accusation after learning it is false risks making them participants in its continued spread.
We need not agree on every doctrine to recognize our shared obligation to speak truthfully.
Gather, Not Scatter — Unite in Christ and Truth
The Church has suffered enough from division without adding unnecessary accusations and misrepresentations.
Our Lord teaches in Luke 11:23 that those who do not gather with Him scatter.
GATHER, NOT SCATTER.
Our calling is to gather Christ’s faithful in truth, not scatter them through false witness.
Let us stand firm upon the Gospel, uphold the Lordship of Jesus Christ, preserve Christian doctrinal integrity, and pursue truthful dialogue among those who confess His name.
We encourage readers to investigate original sources, share corrections, and use Watchman News as a resource for fact-checking important claims affecting Christendom.

CHRISTIANS, PLEASE VERIFY BEFORE SHARING! ✝️
A viral meme claims that Pope Leo XIV suggested all religions are equal and failed to mention Christ.
But the documented evidence contradicts that accusation.
On August 25, 2025, Pope Leo explicitly declared that only Jesus Christ saves, citing Acts 4:12.
He has also welcomed Christian leaders, including Karekin II of the Armenian Apostolic Church, in the pursuit of Christian unity. His wider appeals for religious cooperation concern peace and understanding—not a declaration that all doctrines are equal.
Even his October prayer for cooperation among religions explicitly addresses Lord Jesus.
We are Celtic and Western Orthodox Christians. We have theological differences with Rome, but those differences never justify bearing false witness against another Christian.
James 3:1 warns that teachers face greater judgment. Christians who share misleading religious accusations have a responsibility to correct them once the facts are known.
We must defend truth, even when defending someone with whom we disagree.
GATHER, NOT SCATTER!
Unite in Christ. Stand upon truth. Reject false witness.
