One of the most common errors in modern Christianity is the belief that faith and obedience are opposing concepts. The New Testament teaches the exact opposite. Genuine faith produces obedience, just as a healthy tree naturally produces fruit. Christians are not saved by their works, but the faith that saves is never alone. It transforms the heart, renews the mind, and produces a desire to obey God.
Throughout the ministry of Jesus Christ and the writings of the Apostles, believers are repeatedly taught that true faith manifests itself through love, obedience, holiness, perseverance, and good works. This is why Scripture frequently describes Christians as those who keep God’s commandments, walk in the Spirit, do righteousness, and bear fruit worthy of their calling.
The historic Churches recognized this biblical principle through catechumen instruction, baptismal vows, confirmation, confession of faith, and preparation for Holy Communion. Conversion was never viewed as merely intellectual agreement, but as a sincere turning of the heart toward God and a commitment to walk in newness of life through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The following passages demonstrate that saving faith is living rather than dead, active rather than passive, obedient rather than rebellious, and transformative rather than merely intellectual.
Many modern debates ask whether obedience is necessary after conversion. The New Testament repeatedly answers that genuine faith produces obedience just as a living tree naturally produces fruit. The passages below allow Scripture to speak for itself.

Recovering True Orthodoxy: Scripture Teaching, Not Merely Cultural Sentiment
Conclusion
The Orthodox Church of the Culdees affirms the historic Christian doctrine that salvation is by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Yet Scripture consistently teaches that this faith is living rather than dead, active rather than passive, obedient rather than rebellious, and transformative rather than merely intellectual.
For this reason the historic Churches developed catechumen instruction, baptismal vows, confession of faith, confirmation, and preparation for Holy Communion. Candidates publicly renounced Satan, forsook the works of darkness, confessed Christ, and committed themselves to walk in newness of life through the power of the Holy Spirit.
St. Andrew’s Orthodox Church of the Culdees practices inter-communion broadly with churches that preserve the mainstream Gospel of Jesus Christ, requiring communicants to be converted, baptized, confirmed where applicable, and prepared for the Holy Mysteries.
We understand Orthodoxy in its broad historic sense: the reception of the Ecumenical Faith, the practice of the Sacraments, and Apostolic Succession.
