This publication represents many years of research into the ancient Churches of Britain, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Armorica (Brittany), and the closely related Celtic Churches of Gaul. It gathers together more than 250 principal Saints who flourished before and during the lifetime of St. Augustine of Canterbury (A.D. 597–605), while recognizing the much wider tradition of over 1,000 pre-Augustinian Celtic Saints commemorated within the Orthodox Church of the Culdees.
Unlike many modern summaries, this catalogue seeks to demonstrate that the Christian Church in Britain was already a mature and missionary body long before Augustine’s mission to the pagan Anglo-Saxons. The ancient British Churches possessed bishops, monasteries, schools, missionaries, confessors, martyrs, royal saints, and flourishing Christian communities whose influence extended throughout western Europe.

Why Augustine Matters
Augustine of Canterbury arrived in Britain in A.D. 597 under the commission of Pope Gregory the Great to evangelize the pagan Anglo-Saxons. His mission encountered an already established British Christian tradition with its own bishops, monasteries, customs, and centuries of Christian history. The ancient Celtic Churches continued to preserve their own missionary and monastic heritage while interacting with the developing Anglo-Saxon Church.

This publication is intentionally presented as a foundational catalogue.
The Orthodox Church of the Culdees commemorates well over 1,000 Saints of the pre-Augustinian Churches of Britain, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Armorica (Brittany), and the Celtic Churches of Gaul. Future editions are planned to expand this work into a far more comprehensive Synaxarion, incorporating hundreds of additional saints preserved in ancient calendars, episcopal catalogues, church dedications, genealogies, and the Lives of the Saints.
